On personal responsibility
I'm reading a very interesting story I found on Reddit and, in the comments, I find a very interesting comment as well.
I think this comment depicts, in all honesty, much of what's wrong with the attitude of the majority:
Let's see:
- People attempt to sue the fast food industry for their obesity problems.
- Everyone seems to think it's Big Tobacco's fault that they're addicted to cigarettes.
- Anytime an act of violence with a gun gets publicized, the proper reaction is "We should have more gun control", rather than "That guys was a fucking nutjob"
Yup, I'd say we have a big problem with personal responsibility.
Yes, that's right. We need to draw a line (or, if you're all about the shades of grey, a band) between your responsibilities and everyone else's.
Yes, society is unfair. Yes, society should be changed to be fairer. But much of the shit you catch in your life is your own damn fault. Not being able to recognize it sucks for you, so learn.
